Roller Derby Buttvertisement for Libraries

Roller Derby Buttvertisement for Libraries

Ah, two of my favorite things (women's roller derby and library advocacy), coming together! I first saw mention of this in American Libraries, but I won't bother to wrestle with the ALA website to find a link, IF there is one, since I see this was also covered in Library Journal: Skating under the name "Dame Deviant," Oregon YA librarian April Witteveen wears a "Support Libraries" bumper sticker on her butt during her Lava City Roller Dolls bouts. (I won't link to their main MySpace page; it crashed FireFox on me earlier, but that's where I found this photo. The AL article and photo are in ProQuest. Let me know if you want a copy.)

Though not a biblio-rollergirl myself, I would be ecstatic to see some sort of union or library derby girls. In addition to Ms. Deviant, I know of an archivist in the Garden City Rollergirls, an LIS student in a league in Nacodoches, TX, and I read about a school librarian in Austin. If you're a library worker on quads, I want to know!

Catazon:

Catazon, the cataloging Amazon, of Houston Roller Derby. I'm actually Director of Library Services for a proprietary university, but cataloging is my first love (and I'm 6'1").

jenna:

Catazon--what a great name!

Fascinating to hear that there's a library director rollbrarian! btw I've never seen the term "proprietary university" before. What's that all about?

Catazon:

Thanks! Proprietary is for-profit education, such as University of Phoenix, ITT Tech, DeVry, etc... Usually, these schools have small libraries, mostly online, that serve the campus population.

Chrissy, AKA Madame Furie:

Hey! I'm the LIS student from Nacogdoches, except I just graduated and now I'm a Librarian in Nacogdoches working in Digital Projects and still skating as much as I possibly can. A friend saw this post and forwarded it to me - thanks for the shout-out!

Judy Gloom:

another roller derby librarian in the house!

jenna:

Yay, Judy Gloom! Great name, though it brings up some menstrual images I'm not sure I'd really want to see.

I'm adding you to my RSS feeds.
