Zine Distros review in Library Journal

The latest Library Journal zine reviews column, Teach a Zine Librarian To Fish: Zine Distro Reviews is up. Thanks to Anastasia, Jerianne, Kelly, and Kelsey for helping out. This marks the first column where I wrote a review myself instead of just editing.

The Myth of Professional Neutrality

Co-presenter:

Valerie Bell

Jana Varlejs (moderator)

Event:

MLIS Colloquium Activist Librarianship and the Ethics of Library Neutrality

Abstract:

Symposium description: In defense of user rights, librarians have sometimes been labeled radical militants, but more typically they adhere to the principles of nonjudgmental service, balanced collections, and political neutrality.

My talk refutes the concept that one cannot have and espouse political opinions while still providing nonjudgmental service and representative collections.

Status Update, October 2009

In case anyone cares, or maybe just for the record, I'm on a part-time sabbatical this year. I had the option of taking six months off completely or a year off part-time. PT seemed the wiser choice, productivity-wise. Plus we're in transition at Barnard--the College and the Library, so being around a couple days a week seemed like a good idea.

Archiving Women Report Back

Archiving Women was a one-day conference "bringing together scholars and archivists to examine feminist practices in the archive."

If I were a little more organized, I could share my notes, but unfortunately they're gone. Instead I'm going to bring up three different threads that for me characterized the event. They are preservation vs. privacy, the de-emphasis of the practitioner, and notable vs. common lives.

PS My presentation.

Zines

This is a listing of my zines, made and distributed by me. Right now it's just Lower East Side Librarian Winter Solstice Shout Out and Reading Log, but eventually I'll add the one offs I've made.

my READ poster

ALA has a build your own READ poster gizmo, which I saw on The Shifted Librarian.

They give you four choices of backgrounds, and bizarrely, the one I liked best was "Americana."

Library Leaders Vids

Look ma, I'm on tv. As I wrote to Michael Spelman, who interviewed and taped me for the ALA Emerging Leaders video Leadership Lessons, "well, i didn't hate it, which says a lot.
"that is no reflection of you or your filmmaking or interviewing skills, of course, just my being appalled by how i look, sound, and talk."

Google Grunt

Since Google is tracking my every move, I figured I should share some of the juicy bits with you, as well. Following are all of my Google searches (personal and professional) for June 18 and 19, 2008. Stuff in the parentheses was not part of the search.

Radical Cataloging: the Book

Radical Cataloging: Essays at the Front, edited by K.R. Roberto, which is coming out this summer now has its Table of Contents online. My article, which I'll sooner or later post here in its pre-print version is "AACR2—Bendable but Not Flexible: Cataloging Zines at Barnard College."
